NEW is the new Excitement

Well, technically speaking, I begin my new position tomorrow. I've been wrapping things up in my current position and spending quality time with the individual that I will be replacing. I'm really excited about the new adventure but am nervous about change. I have a new office location in addition to my current office. That means new people, new morning routine, and possibly new afternoon routine. Of course, with the new position comes new processes, new forms, new policies, and new headaches. Today, as we completed the turnover, I looked for new items that are exciting. So here are the top 5 things I have to look forward to:

5) Newer, nicer office furniture. The furniture in this office matches and presents a great opportunity to make the space my own.

4) New workforce with more women than men. Kirsten says that means more baked goods. I'm ok with that.

3) New planner. I bought a brand new planner last night so I can keep up with myself. In college, I depended on one but in recent years I just make lists on all kinds of notepads instead of one place. I'm resuming the planner devotion beginning today.

2) New flexibility. Since I have 2 offices, that means I will be mobile and my schedule will be flexible. I'm super pumped about that.

1) The number one thing I am excited about is: WATER COOLER! My current office does not have a water cooler but my new one does! You have no idea how excited I am. It will be the reason I get out of bed.

Hooray for new!

FB, Reconnecting

In my LTS days, I would serve on the Convention committee and assist the various keynote speakers in whatever way necessary to get them ready for the event. My final year there allowed me to spend some QT (quality time) with a gentleman from WI that spearheaded the marketing revolution of Harley Davidson in the 90s. He's pretty popular among motivational speakers in the marketing arena. We developed an email relationship before his arrival, hung out while he was in town at various Convention events, and emailed a few times afterwards. Let me tell you, he is the coolest cat I've ever met! Sure, he's probably about a decade or more older than myself, but he's the kind of dude I would have been friends with in any social setting. Well, I don't know if you have noticed in the Hampton Roads area, but the local Harley shop has commercials on every time I turn the radio on. Yesterday I thought, "Wonder whatever happened to Ken?" FACEBOOK! I searched it out and found him! I sent him a request and asked if he remembered me. His response: "Of COURSE I do for cripe's sake!" So, we've reconnected thanks to the interweb and Facebook. He's one of my favorite people, so I'm pretty pumped about it.

Ch-Ch-Changes...

As of this afternoon, my entire professional career has officially taken a turn. I'm with the same company, but beginning January 4 in a different capacity. Super amped about the opportunity. "Thank you, Lord, for exciting adventures!"

Pagers aren't gone yet

I've spent a better part of this week in DC attending a conference with my organization. In case you do not know, our products and services include some of the most advanced technological items available in the world. However, our employees may not be so tech saavy.

A gentleman from one of our business units in charge of the more complicated products sat two seats away from me. The first day I began to hear a very loud buzzing sound and noticed the gentleman grab his phone and leave the room. Over time, the obnoxiously loud buzz began to annoy me to no end and I realized it was the gentleman's PAGER. That's right, a pager. Now, can someone explain to me how a man that was using a Blackberry and works for one of the most technologically advanced organizations in the world uses a freakin' pager? I mean, doesn't everyone's cellular voicemail give an option to page someone?

Moral of the story: Pagers. Even a rocket scientist can use it.

Commitment

I learned a little lesson about commitment this morning. The Marathon training schedule had 18 miles for this weekend and Mother Nature had rain on her schedule. When I first left my house, it was just drizzly and I assumed it would be fine. As I approached Karen's house, the rain began to get heavier and I began to question what in the world I was about to get myself into. We decided to give it a shot despite the percipitation. If there's rain on race day, the show will still go on.

At about mile 2, Karen looks at me and says "We could turn around and then finish tomorrow." The rain was pounding and the wind was strong. I was indifferent but really preferred NOT to wake up early again tomorrow for running. I mean, I had been very careful in my eating on Friday and was fueled up. We decided to press on. Then the question arose again around 4.5 miles. This is when we discovered the importance of commitment. We were back and forth for a while with our decision until Karen recites a quote she had read about commitment. Of course, I don't remember the quote but it was about how commitment produces freedom because when we commit, the questions of will we or won't we do not exist. We are committed. That sealed the deal, rain and all. We would finish 18 miles no matter what.

Being wet no longer mattered and, more so, running through mud and rain puddles wasn't even thought of any longer. We were determined to finish and enjoy it along the way. Once I came to terms with sloshing feet and chilly extremities, it was a good run. We finished 18 miles, our longest run yet. And you know what, I had a good time!

PHILLY!

The weekend before Thanksgiving, I made a little trip north to Philadelphia. Chip was working in the area, so we took advantage of the opportunity. The morning of my trip, I ran 16 miles at 6am with every intention to take a little nap prior to the plane ride. Well, that didn't happen. So, with the little bit of sleep I was able to steal on the plane ride, I managed to stay awake and enjoy all that we could in Philly Saturday. First stop: Cheesesteaks.

Now, if you have heard anything about Philly Cheesesteaks, you know about the corner with 2 famous steak places across the street from each other. Different people prefer different places, but we decided on Pat's. We considered trying both, but to be honest we were hungry and not in the mood to wait in line AGAIN. The cheesesteak was ok, but unfortunately I have had better in other places. In fact, Chip looks at me afterwards and says "There's a better one at a place on Tidewater Drive back home. I'll take you there..."

Here I am stuffing my face. Chip didn't want a picture stuffing his face. Weird...

Chip and I decided to drive around a bit and take in some sights. We stumbled on Penn's Landing and since there was 25 minutes left on the meter, we took a little walk to check it out. Chip is an engineer, so when he saw all the suspension bridges at the Landing, he began to explain how it all works. To realize that cables hold that thing up made me extremely uncomfortable driving over them. They make me nervous.

On Sunday, we decided to hit the historical sites. My girlfriend, Karin, and her beau were in Baltimore and agreed to drive over and meet us for the sightseeing. We had a blast and managed to see most everything. My only regret was we didn't see the steps from Rocky. Next time. Next time.

My camera battery died as we approached the Liberty Bell, so whenever I get Chip's pics, I'll post more...hopefully.

Tube Socks and a Smile

Our running adventure started at 6am. Karen had obligations for the day and I was heading out of town, so it just made sense to start early. I must admit I got up earlier today than I EVER rise out of bed. The sun wasn't out yet and we were depending on the few and far between lights of Laskin Road until daylight. We went all over the place including the boardwalk and First Landing Park. It was sort of lonely the first 8 or so miles since no one in their right mind was out running yet. Once we hit the park, it was much better as we began to pass other runners. The only real obstacle we hit today was flooding in the park. Sure, my feet were wet, but we managed to re-route around the deepest part.

There were 3 things that saved the day today and made the run successful. The first thing was Body Glide on my feet. Body Glide is an awesome product that prevents and in most cases eliminates chafing. I always forget to put it on my feet so I don't blister. Today, I remembered. Feet did great. The second thing was GU. I decided before the run that I would ingest 2 today. So, Chocolate Outrage at mile 5 and Vanilla Bean at mile 10. I didn't necessarily need them at those moments, but I figured it was best to just do it so I wouldn't hit rock bottom and desperately need them later. They definitely fueled me today. The last thing and my most favorite were tube socks. When we started the run it was in the high 40s temperature wise. That's kind of chilly but once you hit a certain point, you get really hot. I wasn't really feeling long sleeves or a fleece. Karen had a brilliant idea. Tube socks on your arms until you get hot. It worked! I was able to keep warm in the morning and again on the boardwalk when the wind was ridiculously cold. I need to buy some of my own now. It was the greatest discovery ever!

So, we completed 16 miles in 3 hours 11 minutes. Not really fast, but we exceeded our goal and felt good at the end. To me, that's the most important.

HOT Yoga

In my marathon training, I need some sort of additional activity. I'm horrible at cross training but decided to integrate something new in my life. How about Yoga?

I purchased a package from a new, local yoga studio a few weeks ago and have attempted to participate in a hot yoga class each week. If you are unfamiliar with yoga, yes HOT indicates temperature. It's what they call a "flow class" meaning the class just flows through numerous poses in a 90 degree room. You end up sweating like a beast, but you feel so good!

My first class was pretty awesome. If you know me at all, the act of relaxation is not something that a) comes easy or b) is practiced at all. I'm a high stress, multi-tasking, schedule juggling fool! When I left that first class, I felt like I had never felt before. I was both energized and a bit on the loopy side. Also, I realized how much the stretching helped to relieve the pain from my plantar fasciitis. It was amazing. I could walk normal again!

Tonight's class was actually pretty successful. I landed all of my handstands and even achieved a few new poses. I only have 2 classes left, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to renew after the holidays. If you have an opportunity to practice hot yoga, may I urge you to do it!!! Your mind and body will thank you...

Weekend Plans

My boyfriend, Chip, travels alot for work. Sometimes the travel is to fun, exotic places and other times it is the middle of nowhere but normally it is only Monday through Friday. He left on Sunday for Philadelphia to be gone for the next 2 weeks. Well, he contacted me yesterday to tell me that he found a cheap flight for the weekend. I've never been to Philly, so I jumped at the chance. I'm heading North on Saturday after my run. I love history and am super amped about all the opportunities to visit the city of brotherly love. And the most important thing: PHILLY CHEESESTEAKS! That is the first thing we are doing. When I mentioned to my co-worker who is from Philly about my visit, his first question was "Geno's or Pat's?" I'm not from there so I wasn't sure of my answer. Upon contemplation I have decided BOTH! Why not? So, folks, I can't wait to share with you all the sites of Philly and my own cheesesteak determination.

Speedwork

In the last few months, my running partner has improved her speed and I am still, unfortunately, slow. So, I decided to start doing a little speedwork once a week. This started last week. My initial attempt to speed up my 3 mile run in the middle of the week went well and I was able to shave off a little more than 40 seconds a mile opposed to my comfortable and easy pace. Tonight, I acheived my best time yet and shaved another 7 seconds from last week. I am 11 seconds away from my goal. Perhaps that will be met next week.

At about the first mile, I discovered something was creating minor discomfort. I was in such a rush to change clothes that I left my bra on under my sports bra. Classy!

4 Months to Go

My running partner and I adventured literally all over Virginia Beach to get our miles logged for the weekend. Our usual running spot was under water due to Storm Ida so we had to find a route that would equal 13 miles. Karen took me on a lovely tour of neighborhoods I didn't know about and I fell in love with many waterfront homes. It was nice to be around civilization when the bathroom urge hit. I'm not a fan of the port-o-potty, so when Chickfila was in sight I made the stop. Later that evening when I was driving to Chip's I realized just how much of the Great Neck/Laskin Road area that we ran. WOW!

During the run, I felt pretty good with the exception of a few brief moments of weakness and fighting with the streetside debris that continued to get stuck in my shoe. At the end of the run, we had run about 13.2 miles. That is about .1 more than I have ever done before. Once we stopped, fatigue hit me pretty hard. I was worn out. Thankfully, Karen's husband serves as "Coach" and knows the details of what we need to eat immediately after, etc. Did you know Slimfast is the best recovery drink after a long run? I'm not sure if I really like them, but that was the tastiest "treat" I had ever had! And just think, we have four more months of training left.

Next week: my first attempt at 15-16 miles.

O Christmas Tree!

A number of locals shared a fantastic secret of Hampton Roads when it comes to Christmas trees. There's a wholesale company that sells pre-lit trees at a bargain price. The catch is it is cash only and their hours are worse than banker's hours. So, last week I made lunch plans to go with my bud's mom. After a little negotiation, I ended up with a great pre-lit 7 foot tree for $30! Yes, you read that right. I was pumped! So, today I decided to take it out of its box. Say what you want, but I'm leaving it out. I'm not going to decorate it until Thanksgiving, but this is one step done towards Christmas decorating. And, it isn't like people come to my house on the regular. No one will know except all of you...and the rest of the world if they stumble on this site.

Almost Halfway There...

I'm not going to lie that last week's long run turned into a bad experience and I won't provide details. It made me a little nervous since it was only 1/3 of the marathon distance. After a week of research and some adjustments, I prepped myself for today. There was an inaugural Halloween race at the beach, Wicked 10k. Meghan and I were the only ones that signed up in time before it sold out. So, she and I met up at the race so I could get my first 6 miles in. Karen wasn't able to sign up, so she met me there to run my additional 5 after the race. I was a little cautious during the race a bit nervous about completing that distance and then going back out to run further. Nonetheless, we finished in a respectable time and ran the additional distance better than I had anticipated. I have learned that caffienated GU sure does make a difference in my head and in my body. Sort of gives me that spring in my step needed. So, I finished 11 miles today feeling better than I have felt in a while. Thank the Lord! I'm almost halfway there...

It's Not Fine Dining

Today I had a little break at work and found my way to the local newspaper's "Best of..." list. I was reading through to find out how credible it was and discovered the voters and myself do not agree on many of the winners. One category that I disagreed with was the Best of Fine Dining. The 2nd place winner was a local Mexican eatery. REALLY? FINE DINING? I couldn't believe it. My confusion launched into a vent session with a friend. What began as first thoughts and reasons this Mexican restaurant couldn't be considered fine dining quickly became our version of a Jeff Foxworthy sketch.

If you get free chips and salsa, it is not fine dining.
If you get paper napkins, it is not fine dining.
If your cup is plastic and could have the "Coca-Cola" trademark on it, it isn't fine dining.
If you can seat yourself, it is not fine dining.
If you can walk to the register and have your entire bill split and pay for each item seperately, then it is not fine dining.
If your eating utensils are a faded gray and could be bent with your bare hands, it is not fine dining.
If there are no tablecloths or they are made of paper and you get crayons, then it is not fine dining.
If shorts and flip flops are considered appropriate attire, it is not fine dining.
If there is a sign that states "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service," chances are it is not fine dining.
If there are smokers milling about the dumpster in the back, it is not fine dining.

Care to chime in?

Cold Today, Hot Tamale

I'm not going to lie, I have waited my entire life to use that line. As kids, we would pass the numerous billboards for South of the Border on our way to Myrtle Beach, and that one was my favorite.

Speaking of tamales...a friend of mine at work spent the last week with her folks. They were visiting from TX and brought all the right ingredients for authentic, homemade tamales. I had never had one before, and since I don't dine on swine, my wonderful co-worker made me veggie versions. Can you believe it? I steamed some up for dinner and might I say they were awesome. S.B., teach me how!!!

"That" Runner

I've been racing since I moved to Virginia Beach. For the first few years, each race was a distance I didn't run often. Now that I'm doing long distances, I rarely do 5ks. (In fact, the only 5k I do each year is Race for the Cure. It was this race that started me on the running wagon, so it's a given I will participate.) Anyways, I can remember going to some races and seeing participants running a few miles prior to the start. I always rolled my eyes and thought it was obnoxious. Well, this morning I ran a 5k. According to the training plan, I was suppose to run 9 miles. That's longer than 3.12. In order to make up the difference, my running partner and I agreed to arrive early, run 2 before the race and then finish the last 4 after the race. During the run I realized, I've become "that" runner.

For Mixson

It's funny how you can have something like this blog and most of the time you think you are the only one reading it aside from the regular 3 people that comment. That's truly why I don't write more often. I mean, there are only 3 people that care. Well, you can add another one to the list. I found out my bestest buddy from high school reads this! So, C.W. Mixson, I'm tickled pink you read!

Mixson is my complete opposite although we have been very close friends for pushing 20 years. I'm an evangelical Christian, he's an athiest. I'm extremely conservative, he's all the way on the left. I think animals taste great, he's a vegetarian. The great thing about Mixson is I feel like no matter what I believe, I can always bounce things off of him to get a different perspective. He always respects my opinion and I know that when I ask him a question he will give me an intelligent answer. We are sort of the Yin Yang combo. And even though we won't speak for months, and in some cases years, I will always consider him near and dear to my heart.

After learning the news of the most recent Nobel Peace Prize winner, I had to talk to a liberal to find out what they think about it all. I mean, I will celebrate success when it is earned. I just have a hard time accepting an award for effort rather than results. I mean, I'm training for a marathon. Should they send me a first place medal for my effort? NO WAY! Of course, those folks in Oslo lost my respect in 94 when Arafat won. I came to the conclusion that it was a game of semantics: what does peace really mean? For obvious reasons, we don't define it the same. Nonetheless, Mixson and I had a very productive conversation about it all and that's when he informed me that he reads my blog. So, I decided to dedicate this post to him.

Mixson, I miss you dude! Did you ever think when we would go running down Ocoee Street during your summers home from college that I would still be running and training for a marathon today? You and Andy were the reasons I started running! Thanks, man!

Hills

This morning, Karen and I headed to Mt. Trashmore for our first long run of our training. According to our schedule, we needed to attempt 4-6 hills and mileage of about 7 miles. We haven't incorporated hills in our training before, so I was a bit nervous. I mean, distance can be hard enough without an incline. There are several options when it comes to hills at the park. We opted to run up a long and gentle gradient for the first hill and up a much steeper but shorter distance for the second one. The 2 hills made a set and then we ran a mile in between to recover. The first set was ok but the others really made me breath hard! At one point, I ended up walking up the steep hill because I felt like I was going faster that way than "running." At the end of the run, I was pleasantly surprised that we completed 7 miles. I felt really good at the end, so that's encouraging.

I'm really looking forward to this training and pushing my body beyond its natural comfort. I'm also hoping to shed a few pounds along the way. Unfortunately, the first week of training has already boosted my appetite. Must. Be. Careful. With. Snacking!

All in all, I'm happy to report the first week was good. Total mileage=18 miles. 1 speed run and 1 hills run. Not too shabby.

Day One - Marathon Training

Today was officially the kickoff run for my 6 month Marathon training program. I only wanted to run 4.5 miles but my buddy wanted to keep going to 5 miles. I realized at that moment that I needed to go ahead and start pushing myself even if I don't feel like it. My mind said go, but my body said no. I hadn't made the best eating decisions during the day since my AWESOME co-workers/friends brought in a birthday brunch for me. (I should have only partaken at 10am and not round 2 in the afternoon.) The food was so wonderful, but not so much around mile 4 when my stomach began to turn and I wasn't sure I was going to make it. I pushed through and made it. I'm glad I did, but I'm still recovering as I type.

Note to self: Making good eating decisions will make the distance easier to acheive.

Constitution Day Reviewed

It's no coincidence that I would be born on Constitution Day. That's right! 191 years prior to my entrance, our Constitution was signed and approved. Although September 17, 2009, was not as monumental as the same day in 1787, it turned out pretty good.

Here's my birthday recap:

8:00am Arrive at work to discover various gifts on my desk. I work with some of the most thoughtful people. I received an avocado plant that was born at my birthday weekend last year, Post-It note labels (which I have been dying to buy!), and a clever DIY cheese kit so I can make my own mozzarella and ricotta. Mmmmmm

9:00am Work Inspection to last all day. Disappointment: my rep forgot to bring me cupcakes like I requested.

Noon Received another thoughtful gift of stationary and notepads from my ex-officemate.

3:30pm Left work early to run off the stress of the day and be ready to eat like a queen with Chip later. Rob Socia and I knocked out a good 5 miles and I worked up a great appetite.

5:30pm Chip arrives with a dozen red roses. They are so pretty!

6:30pm After Chip's attempts to throw me off a number of times to where we are eating, we finally arrive at the Melting Pot. An evening of eating, eating, and more eating: Cheese fondue, Salad, Meats and Veggies, and Chocolate Oreo and Marshmallow Fondue. I may never have to eat again!

It was such an awesome day! My folks arrive today for more celebrating all weekend long! Woo-Hoo!

Different than you planned...

In less than 2 hours, I will officially be in my 30s. Sitting here realizing another year has passed and gone, I'm thankful for where I am today rather than where I was a year ago. My entire life is different, for the good. However, I can't help but recall how I predicted life would be at this age. You know, when your young and certain that you will meet the man of your dreams and begin your family by 30 while establishing a rock solid career as a successful doctor/lawyer making 6 digits with just a few more years before you can run for President. Yea, 30 wasn't the benchmark for any of those.

Earlier today I was so pleased with life. However, at this hour I can detect a hint of depression surfacing. How true it is that the mind is quite a battlefield and you choose what you feed. Feed the thoughts of defeat and depression and that is exactly what will grow. Feed the joy of accomplishment and satisfaction with my present circumstances, and you can be sure those thoughts and feelings will grow. I'm learning my weapons of warfare in a very real and applicable way. Nonetheless, it sure isn't how I had planned...

High School

Chip and I went to his high school alma mater for a little football action. The game was recognized in the area as the "Game of the Week," so we thought we would go. As we approached the field, my minde immediately transported back in time to my own high school football memories. The area by the entrance looked just like our field entrance with the middle school crowd socializing and not paying one bit of attention to the game. As we passed by I thought, "I guess all high schools are the same!" It was fun to watch but made me appreciate the Bears. Did you know that at other schools, cheerleaders aren't required to tumble? Our cheerleaders were awesome, even if we did make fun of them. :o) I started to miss the cheers and chants we were use to and of course the drumline. RAWHIDE!

Life is Precious

How easy it is to go about life never considering an early death for yourself, for your loved ones, for those around you. Although I'm removed from the situation, my heart is breaking for a young girl that lost her husband this morning and for my sister, the strong pillar for so many friends around her.

I called my mom this morning after my run, as I always do, to see what was in store for the folks this Labor Day weekend. She began to tell me that my sister had a really bad night. In the middle of the night, my sister received a phone call from the local Police Department. A friend of hers had requested Keri's presence at her home. You see, this friend awoke to find her husband laying beside her not breathing. In her most dire time of need, she called on my sister and being the sensitive and caring person that she is, she responded. So, without sleep Keri went in to work today longing for her shift to end so she could return to her friend. A few moments ago, my mother called to inform me that he didn't make it. A young man of about 27 years old has left this world entirely too soon.

The actual cause of death details are uncertain and I guess really don't matter at this point. What matters is a home is devastated and the world around this young man is affected.

I think the hardest thing right now is being the strong woman of faith that Keri is to a hurting group of people that may or may not know that God is good and His plans are perfect. The burden that we, as Christians, carry can be so overwhelming. Our care and love for those around us exceeds the present and hopes for eternity. But I think it is moments like this, where our faith is activated and our words are penetrating, that open the door for God to show up. He is real and His peace truly passes understanding.

I sit here today with a broken heart for this young girl that is now a widow. As a single woman, I don't understand the love that married couples share. But I can only imagine the hole in her world. I feel alone sometimes being single, but I've never known it any other way. This young girl will have to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and start a new life without the man she married.

I hope that reading this compels you to do 2 things: 1) Pray for this family and those supporting them (especially Keri). Pray for the peace that only our Heavenly Father can provide and the hope for a better tomorrow. Pray for strength and healing during this time. 2) Savor life and your loved ones. Be thankful for the health and life of your family and friends. And not just be thankful but express your feelings to them.

Appreciate the life you have been blessed with and make the most of every opportunity confident that He who began a good work will bring it to completion (Philipians 1:6).

I'm Not So Bad

One of my girlfriends has recently met and begun a very serious dating relationship with a really great guy. As she's gotten to know him, she's shared different things about him with me. I've felt like I could relate to where he came from, not necessarily where he's been and noticed we have a lot in common. I've gotten to know him a little bit and I've felt like he was an old friend that I've known forever. Well, the other day my girlfriend and I went to dinner. She began to tell me another story that once again confirmed how similar we were. Mid-conversation, she looks at me and says "I just realized....MINDY! I'm dating you!"
"You are one lucky girl..."

And this is why I run...

My love for running was revived today. Summer weather drives a wall between me and my running shoes every year. Sure, you can make it work out for a little while but once the humidity becomes unbearable I begin to reconsider my commitment to the sport. Today, we have reconciled our relationship...at least until July.
Today's weather may not have gotten many others as excited as it did me. In fact, I told a friend how I wanted to go outside and run if "the rain is drizzly and not downpour." She didn't seem to feel the same way. Well, after work and some errands, I looked at the temperature gauge to determine I would be an idiot not to take advantage of 67 degree weather on the last day of August. I went to my usual changing spot, threw on my clothes (and my hat), and took off. It took all that was in me NOT to take off in full sprint. I was so excited to be out there, rain and all. It was the longest run I've had during the week since this sweltering heat has come upon us in the 757. Surprisingly, I was quite alone at the Park most of the run. Doesn't anyone else care that it was perfect running weather? I've fallen in love all over again. I guess that's just in time for Marathon training!!

The Underdog wins again!

Last night, Chip and I met the Wilker family at the Tides game for a little piece of Americana, BASEBALL. The Tide franchise has some event going on between every inning. Near the beginning, the "entertainer" selected 3 children from the crowd and they were going to perform a dance off. At the end of their display of moves, the crowd would vote for the best dancer. Well, all three kids were introduced and the music started. The kids started shaking their groove thing except the little girl in the middle. She just stood there for what seemed like forever and then she dropped her head into her hands and just started to cry. It was absolutely pitiful. She cried the entire song and I could tell the emcee didn't know what to do! At the conclusion of the tunes, the crowd voted. Our little cryer won unanimously! It was so precious. Ahhh, it always feels good when the underdog takes home the prize...

Popeye the Movie

Last night, I found out a friend of mine owns Popeye, the movie. Immediately, I had thoughts of my childhood and how that movie was my absolute favorite. When I was very young, we lived in Germany. Movies and television (from the US) were limited and there are only two things I distinctly remember watching from that time of my life: Fame and Popeye. I remember thinking Robin Williams was so awesome, never realizing how vulgar and crazy he really was! In fact, I saw Popeye before I ever saw Mork and Mindy. This movie was my introduction to Robin Williams. Well, I decided to take a walk down memory lane while I wait on Chip today and watch the movie. This thing is classic and has a million quotable lines beyond "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." This movie is still awesome, I'll have you know!

Albums That Changed My Life...

Chip went away to Italy on Saturday and we knew we wouldn't have any communication for a week. I decided to send him with a letter for each day he was away. I made a list of random topics and devoted each day to one. I had everything covered: Art, Music, Food, God, Future/Goals, and Potpourri. (You remember that category from Jeopardy? "I'll take Potpourri for 200, Alex.") Seriously, the letters were so just stream of consciousness. It was sort of fun to write!

Anyways, I finally identified the top 10 albums that have changed my life in the Music letter. While I was running today, I reviewed the list to try and remember the albums and thought I would share them with you guys. They are in no particular order:

1. The White Album by the Beatles
2. Abbey Road by the Beatles
3. Beatles For Sale by the Beatles
4. It Takes Two by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock
5. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We by the Cranberries
6. Thriller by Michael Jackson
7. Indigo Girls by Indigo Girls
8. Out of the Blue by Debbie Gibson
9. Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
10. 18 & Life by Skid Row

Don't judge me...

Disturbing Run...

Yesterday morning, my running partner and I went on our usual Saturday run. It was pretty early, but we noticed lots of running activity. As we started, a lady stopped us on her way out of the park, our way in and told us a man was missing and we could find a picture of him at the Visitor's Center. Questions immediately starting running through our heads. Was he abducted? Was he running late at night? Was it a medical condition that may have occurred during a hot run? As we progressed into the park, we noticed many state ranger vehicles and foot traffic on the trails. We couldn't decide if all the foot traffic were trainings or real life search parties. Well, it appears that the many individuals that we saw were participating in the search for a local Navy man. I'm anxious to hear the autoposy report...

Tampa

I had a conference in Tampa last week to attend with a co-worker/friend, Ryan. The conference was actually pretty interesting and I was able to get a handle on some procedures that I have otherwise been learning on my own. The evenings made it a nice trip and break from my routine life. My girlfriend, Cybil, lives there and I was certain she would give birth during my visit. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I'm disappointed. Nonetheless, we were able to meet up, have dinner, and catch up on life. I enjoyed that.

Ryan brought his family on the trip and they graciously adopted me for the week. We went to watch the Tampa Bay Rays and NY Yankees play baseball one night (even though the American Idol tour was playing about 500 feet from our hotel window. :o) ) We even had several meals together. It was a lot of fun. I'm not sure you can tell but Ryan's shirt says "This is what awesome looks like." His son bought it for him while we were in the conference and it was quite the hit. I'm just sad I didn't have a chance to buy one to give as a gift. It was pretty hilarious.
Well, I'm back home and back to the grind tomorrow...

My Sister's Best Friend's Wedding

I recently made a quick trip to Atlanta for my sister's bff's wedding. Keri and Deb met each other early on in their college life and they immediately became close. So much so, that Deb began joining my family on family vacations and continued to go with us until just a few short years ago. In addition, she worked for my mother as a student worker during her last few years at Lee. She's pretty much family.
The groom, Adam, comes from a family friend of my sister and I. I grew up with his 2 brothers and his older sister but didn't really have much of a relationship with him since he was younger. However, my sister grew up with him and his brother, Rod. They were all closer in age. Turns out, Keri and Deb went to hear Rod's band play several years ago and Adam was there. Keri introduced Deb and in Keri's words told Deb "You should like him!" I guess it worked because they are now husband and wife.
The whole fam had the opportunity to travel and attend. It was a lot of fun and also great to catch up with some old friends.

UPDATED: Shopping Success!

I have a problem that most women suffer. I love to shop. Chip and I had a discussion about it today and he thinks I should just buy a few nice items rather than lots of items at the local TJ Maxx. But I'm a woman that loves to shop and only buying a few nice items won't satisfy my need to purchase. Call me an addict...I do.

I have a wedding to attend next weekend, so I thought this would be the perfect excuse to buy a new dress. I wasn't sure what I was looking for. Nothing struck me until we hit the last department store. First off, I checked the shoe department because I am looking for a classic pair of camel brown heels for work. Lo and behold, I found the CUTEST pair of patent leather navy blue flats. Sure I have plantar fasciitis and shouldn't wear flats but these goodies were 10 bucks! I'll buy inserts. They were so stinking adorable that I bought my sister a pair of black ones (only because I couldn't decide on a fun color for someone else). I then proceeded to look at dresses. I luckily found a very cute wedding appropriate dress for 20 bucks! Seriously, this was a pleasantly successful shopping experience. I love those!

Female Fellowship

If you have talked to me in the last few months, you know that I have been in a rut with church. I love my church, don't get me wrong, but I've felt something is just missing. In a discussion with my girlfriend, Adrienne, I was invited to join her small group Bible study. Tonight was the last night of the study and I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have ever been in any study with me before, I've never been bashful about offering my 2 cents (or more in some cases) but I did things differently this time. As selfish as it sounds, I took from this group. I purposefully listened and just tried to take it all in and offered zero in the conversation. It was a bit unlike me, but I rather enjoyed observing and learning from women of various walks of life. I'm sad it is over but extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn.

The study involved a Life Journal and the Bible. The Journal gave a list of readings each day and then you would select a verse that you identified as meaningful or important to you and wrote about it. The template to use for writing is S.O.A.P. (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer). It definitely sent a jolt to my reading the Word and put me in a routine that I rather enjoy. Not to mention it has forced me to read much of the Old Testament that we all shy away from (Minor Prophets, Major Prophets). I don't dislike the Old Testament, but find the New such an easier read not to mention a bit more joyful. Those Prophets can throw down some harsh language!

All in all, I'm thankful for the group and study and praying that I will continue S.O.A.P. readings at least until I can get through the whole Bible.

Adrienne, thank you so much for inviting me and letting me tag along. I'm still praying for your situation and I am more than confident it will indeed be greater than you imagine. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. But in ALL your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

Sandy Saturday

I meet my running partner, Karen, every Saturday morning for our long runs. We have had this routine for about 2 years. Recently we registered for this year's Mud Run and knew we needed to start preparing. This race is going to be much more challenging than our normal flat, fast race routes. According to the race's website, the course is "an 8k run with obstacles through the surf, sand, mud and muck of Little Creek Amphibious Base." Obstacles include a wire crawl, tire obstacles, mazes and a mud pit. I'm really looking forward to it (and trying to identify clothes I will toss post race). I'm NOT looking forward to running in sand. This Saturday we attempted a light run/walk at the Bay. The hard part is the softness of the sand and the slip slidin' of your feet. I decided that if I made short, quick strides on the soft sand, it wasn't as bad. I'm hoping the sand is at least flat because my ITB is not a fan of gradient running surfaces. Next weekend we are attempting the Oceanfront sand. I'm hoping that's easier!

It's Like Walking on a Marshmallow...

In case you don't already know and are curious, I am beginning to develop Plantar Fasciitis. That basically means the connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot is inflammed. It is a common injury for runners. I've been stretching my Achilles lately in an effort to minimize the pain. The first steps in the morning are the absolute worst. Well, on July 4th I made a trip to the outlets (a successful one at that). I purposefully wore some flip flops that had more cushion and arch support than my flat J.Crew variety. BIG mistake! I shouldn't have worn flops at all but it went with my outfit! Anyways, by the end of the day I could barely walk and the next morning I all but crawled to the shower. I had to run to Target for an errand, so I decided to see what the good doctor had to offer - Dr. Scholl's that is. God Bless him! I purchase a pair of orthotics specifically for Plantar Fasciitis and my world has changed. I feel like I'm walking on marshmallows! And I'm starting to crave chocolate and graham crackers...

26.2

I've been considering a new challenge for the last few weeks and officially committed. In March of 2010, I will complete my first marathon. Today, I'm excited for the challenge. I hope that I'm this excited on a random Saturday morning come February and I'm setting out for 20 miles...

Fun in the Sun

I usually run on Saturday mornings and in the summer, the earlier the better. This weekend, my running partner and I agreed that 7AM would keep us from too much humidity and give us a better opportunity for a longer run. Chip lives around the corner from where I run, so he offered to make me breakfast afterwards and take me out on his boat. So, once I showered the grime and sweat of 7 miles off, we headed to Trader Joe's to buy the ingredients for some yummy omelets. Chip's culinary skills are quite impressive and tasty! Then we were off to the boat for fun in the sun. We didn't stay out too long, but it was a very relaxing time together. He bought me a few magazines the day before so I would have something to read while we were out and he showed off his nautical talent. He's pretty awesome! To say the least, I was pretty worn out since I'm use to a little nap post run on Saturdays but I hope to have more Saturday mornings like this for the summer. I loved it!

Amish Country, Ohio

One of my girlfriends tied the knot in Amish Country, Ohio. She is the first of the Bright Eyes to marry, so we all had to be there for this momentous occassion. I was a little unsure of what the middle of nowhere Ohio would have to offer. I was in for a real treat! Although it took Joanna and I what seemed like forever to arrive in Cleveland (the other one) and then drive to the middle of nowhere, we were not disappointed. Saturday morning while the bride and Maid of Honor were getting ready, Joanna and I decided to explore this little town. Guess what we found? CHEESE!
Laugh if you must, but to find a cheese showroom where all flavors of cheese are ready for tasting is heavenly. And taste we did! I probably tasted well over 20 different kinds of cheese identifying new favorites (yogurt cheese and farmer's cheese) and even some that I didn't care for (butter cheese). We had a blast!

Here are the ladies right before the wedding. What a joy to share this time with Nikki and to catch up with everyone. As a single woman, attending a wedding can create lots of thoughts in your own head about what you hope for your future. By the end of the weekend, I think the remaining 3 of us had everything worked out in our heads minus the groom. But why get caught up in the tiny details, right?

Here we are at the reception. We got a good kick out of this picture because neither Karin or I realized I was holding her hand for the picture. HAHA! It was pretty funny.

Congrats, Nikki! We wish you and Sky a happy future together.

The Fray

You may recall that my good buddy from college, Jeremy McCoy, is playing bass for The Fray. Well, they made a stop in Virginia Beach during their summer tour and we were able to meet up. Jeremy joined me for church on Sunday morning and then we caught up talking about everything from politics to the modern church. I have always respected Jeremy and his opinion, so it was great to discuss these topics that are so near to my heart and to hear his perspective. I gained alot of wisdom from that discussion about many things. Thanks, Jeremy!

I found it quite entertaining when we returned to the venue to drop him off and the "security guard" was so lenient on letting us back. All Jeremy told him was "I'm with the band." I thought, couldn't just about anybody use that line? Oh well...

Apparently, the band gets a certain number of tickets for each venue that they can give away to family and friends. Fortunately, they didn't need many for VA Beach, so Jeremy graciously provided some tickets and After Show passes. Chip and I met up with Meghan and her beau for the show. I tried to take lots of pictures of Jeremy but it took a while before I figured out how to make them look better.

After the show, the band hangs out with their friends and family for a bit. We went backstage and spent time with Jeremy. We also had an opportunity to meet a few folks with the band. Everyone was really nice and Jeremy seems happy to be doing what he's doing. I jokingly told him he did great, but who were those other guys on stage?!?! LOL I hope he's able to stay with this gig for awhile. They would be losing if they didn't let him.

A-T-L

Last weekend I traveled to Atlanta to spend time with some girlfriends from college and to celebrate Cybil's bundle of joy soon to arrive. I learned at arrival that the weekend would mostly involve eating and hanging out. Good thing we lauged alot or we could have gained some serious weight. Actually, I think I did pack on at least 5 pounds.

After a 2 hour delay, I was finally on my way to Atlanta. Whatup and Joel scooped me up and Brittany was waiting at their place. We stayed up way too late, as any visiting group of friends would. The next morning, we arrived at Kelly's house for brunch and coffee and started the chatter that would not end until our departures. Immediately following brunch, we headed to the shower luncheon. Yeah, I know. Our eating was pretty ridiculous but you only live once!

As you can see below, the gang all showed for the luncheon. Unfortunately, Brittany and Sarah both had family obligations that took them on their separate ways following our time together at the cafe.

After the luncheon, we all headed to Amberly's house to see her little girls and relax from all the food prior. Thankfully, Joanna lives down the street so Whatup and I were able to sneak a nap in before the evening festivities began. Additional folks arrived at Berly's place for a cookout that really was a cookin since the rains came. We sat around the table sharing stories of our college youth and laughing alot. Sure, some of the conversations got a little out of hand but that makes for good stories the next time we get together. Right? God bless Joel for sticking it out with a bunch of crazy women!
Afterwards, Whatup and I spent the night with Jo. Since breakfast was at her place the next morning, we stayed up a bit to cook so we had less to take care of the next day.

After stuffing ourselves and hearing the umpteenth labor and delivery story from the mothers, we headed to the pool to just relax. We were able to lay around in the sun and spend quality time as a group sharing life lessons and encouragement while also nurturing one on one relationships on the side.

Once everyone was showered and ready we met up at Flip Burger Boutique for the last meal as a group. This place was amazing! How ingenius it was to take the classic burger and fry joint and add creative variations in a modern atmosphere. I would bet this would be the love child of Ikea and Five Guys Burger and Fries.

I think all the girls would agree the greatest part of this dinner experience was the milkshakes. Below you will see my fantastic Nutella shake with burnt marshmallows. I don't know about you, but that combo is straight from heaven. They even had a Krispy Kreme milkshake and you guessed it, there is a doughnut inside. Mmmmmmm

Thank you, Ladies, for a wonderful time. I cherish the memories we have and look forward to the ones we will make in the future. Can't wait to meet up with you all again soon and laugh some more.

Olives, No Thank You

I consider myself a pretty serious foodie. I love food. I love cooking. I love eating. I hate olives. I was reading about the MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acid) quality of olives and decided to give them another shot. I mean, perhaps I could incorporate olives into my life. I decided to try tapenade. I hear about this olive spread on the food network and read about it in my various cookbooks and food mags. If Rachael Ray loves it, I will too, right? She's never let me down before. WRONG! I bought green olive tapenade today to give it a try. I mean, it's a win-win purchase at Trader Joe's since I can get a refund if I hate it. Well, it's official. I hate it. I just can't make myself like them. If you've got any ideas, I'd try it again. Is there a way to ease yourself into olives?

Red Light, Green Light

I witnessed the funniest thing this morning. Due to crazy weekend schedules, my running partner and I decided to hit the park at 6:30am as opposed to our usual 8 or 8:30 schedule. Being done so early, I couldn't do my usual Trader Joe's stop on the way home. I decided to head to Starbucks and have some breakfast. It was a bit chilly, so I opted for a hot cappuccino instead of my iced summer drink. (Can you smell the espresso? Mmmmm) I had bought a new book the night before and had it in the car, so I settled in at the store to read, eat, and drink. Then it was time to go home (and take a nap). Almost to my abode I remembered that I needed to stop at the bank. I figured they opened at 8am and it was almost 9. Once I pulled up, I realized that they were not open and there were cars sitting about 10-15 feet away from the drive-thru windows waiting on them to open. Then I noticed the red lights over the lanes and concluded they were closed but probably only for the next 3 minutes. And then, it happened. I was sitting behind one car and the lane to my immediate right had another car waiting the same distance from the window. When that red light above the lane turned green, I thought for a moment I was at a NASCAR race as the cars both pulled to the window with such great speed and determination to be the first customer on this Saturday morning. I just sat there laughing until I realized I needed to resume my position as 2nd in line. WOW!

That's What Friends Are For...

I had an interesting episode occur today. My father called me in a bit of a panic with the question "Do you know anyone mechanically inclined in the Atlanta area?" I thought that was an interesting question, so I asked what was going on. He informed me that on my parent's trip back to SC from his GA conference, the radiator hose on their car burst. I couldn't think of anyone in particular that was "mechanically inclined" but about 75% of my besties live there. I told him I would get on the horn and call him back. I did what I knew to do from my days as Sigma president - phone tree! So, I sent a mass text out to Joanna, Whatup, Sarah, Kelly, and Joel. Immediately, Sarah called to find out where they were and then she gave me Amberly's number. Everyone started texting me back trying to help out and Joel used his handy dandy iPhone to find the nearest mechanics in the area. It all happened so fast and all I could think about was my folks sitting on the side of the road in the ATL heat. I mean, come on people. Why do you think it's called "HOTlanta"?

I couldn't believe how responsive everyone was and so willing to help. It was so amazing! The second time I ended up talking to Berly, she wanted to chat about my visit South and then I realized, "I'm gonna see all of these great people in one week!" This afternoon I appreciated my ATL crew more than ever and I'm super amped about the girls weekend just around the corner.

It's funny how there are some relationships that you build that are solid and firm for life even though they aren't watered and fertilized often. I guess it's more like family...

Protein Success

Thank you to everyone that offered advice on my protein dilemma. I have been experimenting with protein drinks in the morning and I must admit, they aren't bad. They taste pretty good and keep me full for at least 3 hours. My 'during the week' running partner, Meghan, gave me 2 different powders to taste and I intend to hit up the Vitamin Shop and purchase. I also bought Trader Joe's Whey Protein, chocolate flavored. I have blended that bad boy up with some milk and banana and that's a real treat! I'm still a fan of English Muffin with almond butter. That breakfast option also keeps me full for a good 3 hours or more. In the morning, I just decide drink or eat?

The making of a green thumb

I do not have a green thumb. I have killed plants that should never die, but I am learning to sustain the life and beauty of my patio plants. So, today when I realized my Tiger Lily had bloomed, I just had to share.

BONUS!

So, a few months ago I heard that Coldplay was coming to town and I mentioned it to a few folks to see if anyone was interested in going. I didn't really have any bites, so I didn't bother. About a week ago, our amphitheater had a lawn blowout sale for their summer shows. Lawn tickets were 10 bucks and Coldplay was on the list! So, that changed a few folks minds. Kirsten agreed to go and a few folks from work were already planning to take their wives, so we met up with them. I also met up with the SBUX crowd.
I noticed a small stage on the lawn when we walked up and remembered a friend mentioning that they play out in the crowd. Of course, I insisted we set up camp there and we did. The show was awesome but even more so when we were about 4-6 feet away from the band. My pictures aren't very good because of my placement in reference to the obnoxious spotlight. But I was able to grab a few pics not to mention my camera battery was dying (I must plan much better than i currently do).

I've liked Coldplay for awhile, but my respect and adoration for them soared post show. These guys are not only talented but very humble and appreciative of their fans. I've been to a million shows and it was the first time I felt like they really were grateful that we sacrificed our time to support them. On top of it all, they gave away a free CD to all concert goers. Kirsten and I laughed on the way home because the price of our lawn ticket was the price of a CD. "We bought this really great CD and got a FREE Coldplay concert!" BONUS!

Funny thing happened yesterday...

Yesterday was ODU's graduation and my dear friend, Pattee, finally completed her undergrad degree. This was a major accomplishment for her and with every exciting milestone, a party is deserved. Folks from all over came to town for the event and it was a lot of fun. Well, a funny little thing happend during the party...

If you know me at all, you know that I'm not a big animal person. I mean, if you ask Kirsten or Dyanna, they would say I hate animals but I don't. I just don't get excited if I see them and I don't want your dog jumping all over me. I'm not mean about it, just indifferent. Well, meet Gracie:

She's the cute little dog Rob is holding and her "mom" is the camera lady. Well, "mom" brought Gracie outside and there were a few older dogs present. I guess they were scaring Gracie so "mom" picked her up and says to me, "Mindy, can you hold her for a few minutes. She isn't ready for all these dogs yet." I politely smile and say "Sure!" When she walks away I look at the girl beside me, smile, and say "I don't like dogs." We just started to laugh (Gracie still in my lap) and Rob walks out and yells "Mindy, you don't like dogs!" Finally, Pattee's sister comes over and asks if she can hold her and I more than willingly oblige. I still chuckle about it and I think of Dyanna, Kirsten, Ali, and Adrienne. They all would have thoroughly enjoyed it!

Marathon Consideration

Ok, people, here's the deal. I've been running consistently since I moved here and in the last 2 years I have upped the ante, so to speak, and started training for longer distances. I completed my third half marathon in March and thought that's the furthest I will run. Well, I'm now considering a full marathon. The race is in March, so there is plenty of time to prep (both physically and mentally). Here is my concern: my mind always checks out around mile 10. I'm much more concerned for my mental health than my physical health. Nonetheless, my running partner has already registered. So, if I ever want to attempt a full, I should do it with someone. You can't run 20 miles alone...well, I can't run 20 miles alone. So, um, what do you think? Should I just go for it? I'm taking a poll prior to registering...

AM Protein Problem

Ok, readers. I need some advice. I have got to find a new breakfast option. I believe my problem would be solved with an increase in protein. I cannot stay full all morning and I'm noshing on anything I can find by 930am. HELP! Please offer suggestions that would be quick to make and easy to eat...in the car. I'm interested in protein shakes if you have any ideas. Thanks!

Summer Schedule

If you know me well, I don't travel too often except for visiting the folks. Well, this summer is going to be different. I received an email from Delta not too long ago to let me know that some of my miles were going to expire. So, I have started to use them up. My first trip is going to Atlanta for Cybil's baby shower. I'm looking forward to seeing most of my girlfriends from college. I think the last time I saw this group collectively was Cybil's wedding a few years ago. The next trip is the first wedding for a Bright Eye. Nikki's nuptials will be in Ohio and Joanna and I booked our flights last night. I'm already pumped about these trips. HOORAY! I've got enough miles for one more trip and about 3 more places I want to visit: Nashville, Dyersburg, and Tallahassee.

TOTUS

If you haven't added the Teleprompter of the United States (TOTUS) to your daily entertainment reading, may I urge you to do so. It always provides the right laugh I need even though things are going crazy around me - in my little world and the Big World. Today's entry concerning the Swine Flu is so hilarious, I must share it (Bruno is J.Napolitano):

New Name, Same Sickening Feeling
Bruno, our DHS secretary, just stuck his head into the Oval to say that he had solved the Swine Flu epidemic. In fact, Swine Flu no longer exists ... because he and his branding specialists, who are still under contract at Homeland, renamed it. From now on, all government officials will refer to the pandemic as a "Porcine-induced Disaster."Now some of you will scoff at this, but keep in mind the next best suggestions came from Joe Biden. In a speech tonight, he wanted to call the Porcine-induced Disasters either "The Squeeler from Tequiler" or "Montezuma's Revenge Part Dos."

Sure, I had a LONG day at work but I still think I would have laughed at this if the day didn't make me delirious.

Today's Trauma

Well, today's "trauma" really is the result of yesterday's trauma. Yesterday afternoon I managed to deeply slice my right pinky open. The actual event didn't hurt but I could not get it to stop bleeding. Finally, I managed to wrap 2 bandaids around it to give just enough pressure to hold the opening shut and subside the bleeding. This morning I decide to change the bandage and lo and behold the blood began to pour. Oh well, off to the doctor I went hoping they could sow me up or something. (SIDEBAR: I have never had stitches before and I have a rather successful record of passing out when donating blood.) I was a little nervous, as you can imagine. When the nurse saw it, she told me that I should have gone to the ER last night and had it stitched. The PA was cool with it and applied the tape to hold my skin together. I felt nauseaous when we were trying to apply pressure to make it stop bleeding and I felt a little light headed on the way to my car. Thankfully, no passing out! The only instruction was to keep the little guy dry. Wouldn't you know the first time I went to the restroom, I washed hands as usual. I'm entirely too irresponsible for these things! So, my day has consisted of TRYING to keep the pinky dry (I dread showering tomorrow) and doing everything with the obnoxious pinky up. AND, since I can't type with it, this entry is the first time I have used apostrophes today (using other fingers of course). I hope this finger heals soon. My pinky is tired from not being used...

Be nice to your Barista

I was reminded today of a story I meant to share last week. In case you don't know, I have been moonlighting as a barista at Starbucks for the last 5 years. It all started because I wanted extra Christmas money. I fell in love with the people and stuck around...forever. Well, the countdown begins to my resignation as the lone original at 7911 and after the experience I had last week, I can leave confidently saying "I have seen it all."
Our store is a drive-thru stop, so last week I was making drinks at the drive-thru bar. So, the dude taking orders gets this HORRIBLY mean customer that was yelling at him through the headset. I hear her rants and just look at him all the while he is laughing saying "She is so rude!" Well, she was insisting that he read back her order but wanted cookies too. He looks at me and asks if I will tell her drink order while he goes to look for cookies. I read her back "Quad grande white chocolate mocha". Then she starts on me saying I am yelling at her. The woman was mad! I just looked at Curtis and said, "Dude, she's getting decaf for sure." Curtis left me to take her money, where she starts in on me AGAIN that I was yelling at her. Sorry, I've been there too long and I gave her what for. Legendary customer service is sometimes just overrated. I complete her DECAF quad grande white chocolate mocha and felt this overwhelming satisfaction as she drove away knowing that as her barista I have the power to jolt her or not. Tonight, no jolt.
A few hours later the store manager and I are the only ones left in the store. So, I had told her about the incident earlier and we got a good laugh out of it all. Well, you aren't going to believe this, but the woman CAME BACK! Yea, no kidding! So, now she's in this incredibly good mood and says to me, "This coffee was so good. I'm wired! I want one more!" She's wired....on four shots of DECAF espresso. It was fantastic. I sold her another drink and decided she could have regular now. If she thought she was wired before, oh what a surprise she was going to have!
Moral of the story: Don't take your crappy day out on your barista. They have the power...

Savannah

My girlfriend, Kirsten, and I have been working on a project at work that has turned our smiles upside down on a number of occasions. So, we decided we deserved to get away for a bit and decided on Savannah. Kirsten had never been and I have family there. So, we made the trip South. We drove to my folks house to shorten the trip listening to Michael Jackson's Thriller much of the way. Aaahhh, the memories it brought back. That was my very first album, I will have you know! According to Kirsten, I had not lived yet because I had NEVER stopped in at South of the Border. We had our picture taken with Pedro to prove it. Anyways, after a nice brunch with my mother we went to Savannah to soak up the history and eat lots of food. Both were successful goals.

This is the childhood home of Flannery O'Connor. We took the tour and were captivated by the simple life and beauty of the 1920s.
This is the Mercer House made famous in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" movie.

The trip was a blast and gave us both the RnR we needed.
